What do Career Advisers know anyway?…
At school when I was 15, I had my one and only meeting with a Careers Advisor. The Careers Advisors was a stranger, I had never met her before in my life. She had looked at my school reports and I think I remember doing a ‘Cosmopolitan Magazine ‘‘shall I dump him’ style quiz to see what I should do with the rest of my life. Inspired by the phenomena of a show called ‘Changing Rooms’ I knew I wanted to be an Interior Designer.
The Careers Officer obviously thought this was far too ambitious and told me to set my sights on being a civil servant or getting a job when I was 16 in my manufacturing hometown. I am amazed I listened to this woman considering I knew it all already, but she really did shatter my belief in myself and shrunk by ideas of what jobs were really available for me in the big wide world.
Today I am sure Careers Advisors are wonderful people but mine was truly crap back in the day. Finally, I am doing what I love and am dedicated to making interiors beautiful with my wallpaper designs. I would still love to add an Interior Designer qualification to my skills. It’s never too late. Don’t give up and most importantly Don’t take the advice of just anybody 😊
